Crossroads in Worcester, MA

Crossroads was an active and effective outreach of the body of Christ in Worcester, MA for over 18 years.  On November 15, 1984, Crossroads Coffeehouse, a drop in mission center, at 203 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA, was opened.  This highly successful mission provided a haven from the streets to many for over 15 years.  When the facility first opened, Pleasant Street was rampant with drug dealing and prostitution, but by January 2000, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette described its transformation in a front page article as “the most concentrated three’block stretch of Christianity in the city.”  Many in the community will readily testify that the ministries provided by Crossroads Coffeehouse were key to this noteworthy change.1021.jpg068001

Crossroads Coffeehouse on Pleasant Street closed in January 2000, in light of the community transformation clearly seen and documented.  A well established Christian community remains.  We give God the glory!

In November 1991, Crossroads expanded its ministry and purchased a twenty-two room duplex at 9-11 Charlton Street, Worcester, MA.  Charlton Street, considered Worcester’s worst street, was the address of those who perpetrated 70% of all the crime in that city of 169,000.  In spite of this, we set up our base there.  9 Charlton Street became our headquarters housing our offices and 11 Charlton Street served beautifully as Crossroads Home for Men, housing men in recovery from life controlling addictions.  108

Christway Academy, a multi-age, multicultural mission school for children grades one to eight from low/moderate income families, was a pilot project of Crossroads from 1998 to 2002.  Its mission was to equip children to grow into mature disciples of Christ, giving them the academic and spiritual foundation needed to succeed in family, community and life; and its vision made quality Christ centered education accessible to those with little or no financial means.  After successfully completing three years, the school successfully merged with Worcester Kingdom Academy, a Christian High School, which Crossroads helped birth in 2000.

Children Church, an interdenominational outreach to at risk children, provided a Sunday School and Worship Service experience on Saturdays for at risk children ages 4 to 14. Through this ministry Crossroads effectively shared Jesus’ love and message of grace with many unchurched children from troubled communities in Worcester.

In addition to Crossroads Coffeehouse, Crossroads Home, Christway Academy and Children Church, the ministry sponsored major city-wide outreaches including Praise Marches (bringing 4000+ Christians from some ninety churches together in open worship and praise on the streets), Crosswalks (bringing pastors and ministers out on the street bearing crosses and coming together in unity, and Christ-centered block parties  in troubled neighborhoods as a vehicle of evangelism.  Additionally, there are prayer walks, one on one ministry on the streets at night, Christmas Outreaches and the meeting of tangible needs such as food, emergency shelter and clothing.

To summarize Crossroads mission, one would say that Crossroads ministers to the unique spiritual needs of the homeless, the disenfranchised, street people and those battling with life controlling addictions and provides preventive ministry to at risk children by encouraging Churches, Christian organizations and Christian individuals to work together beyond denominational walls in reaching out to this population.
